Question by ha: How do you explain “Hawaii Time”?
You know how in Hawaii they have ‘Hawaii Time’ where everything is sort of approximate and you get there when you get there? Is there a really good way of explaining that? I feel like I bumble it and use way too many words…

If you describe it as “island time” it might make more sense. You could say it’s more “laid back.” Or, for example, you could explain that the bus system uses “estimated arrivals” and not really a fixed, predictable schedule.

I would just say (with the exception of things like work) people take a pretty casual approach to being on time.
It’s just another way of saying that schedules are really more of a state of mind rather than being set in stone. It’s also another subtle way for native Hawaiians to show disrespect and contempt for haoles.
